An inspiring Story

Do you know the story of the When-pigs-fly-bakery in Maine? Ron Siegel had the idea of ​​making money by baking and selling crafted bread despite the competition from much cheaper supermarket goods. His friends thought that would only work „when pigs fly“. So actually never. Today Ron Siegel sells more than 12,000 loaves of bread a day! Why? Technical skills certainly played a role, but it was enthusiasm for an idea and belief in its success that brought a dream to life.

A wonderful quote from Gerald Hüther, a renown German neurobiologist, that is supported by large scientific evidence. Enthusiasm is contagious. It helps with learning, promotes the energy to keep going even when things get difficult, and makes us work with more joy.

What if we managed to bring this kind of atmosphere into our companies and organizations more often? The exciting thing is that it often doesn’t require much effort. Laugh together, use one of your strengths, support each other, achieve something together that is important to everyone and be happy about what you have accomplished – even the seemingly small things. And you have already done something for each of the PERMA pillars: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishments.

Even if there is no magic formula, work processes and the work environment can often be noticeably improved with small things. Meaningful work (Frankl), autonomy in action (Karasek) and appreciation (Siegrist) all contribute to motivation. Cooperation and connection as well as a positive leadership culture promote joy in work. Those who are passionate about what they do take difficulties easier (are more resilient), release more creativity and are more successful.
